Set amongst orange and lemon groves and maginatively designed to blend in with its quite spectacular setting, this hotel has an unrivalled elegance and atmosphere. Bellapais Gardens is literally surrounded by history. Bellapais Abbey and ‘Bitter Lemons’ (the house immortalised in Durrell’s classic of the same name) are both a stone’s throw away. The whole area is criss-crossed with old Crusader roads, dating back to the time of Richard the Lionheart, and walking along these trails gives the visitor a rare insight into the history of this quite exceptional region. The focal point of Bellapais Gardens is the traditionally-adorned cliff-top lounge/dining room with its welcoming log fire. Affording spectacular views over the Kyrenia coastline, it is beautifully furnished and a treasure trove of Cypriot antiques and bric-a-brac.
